As someone who is straightedge I have a fascination with drug culture which I akin to people on earth being fascinated by the possibility of aliens and life on other planets. It is this whole other world. Being a guide to these dark worlds is what Max Mundan does best. The poems in here are the ones you can't look away from even when you want to. I made the mistake of taking this book with me out to dinner and even when the descriptions of things were surely about to ruin my appetite, I could not help but keep reading. That kind of compelling story telling is what sets Max apart. Whenever I read Max I think to myself "Hmmm maybe I should go read Permanent Midnight again or go back to my James Frey collection." Traveling along with Max in these poems is much like going abroad, you will definitely want to visit but in the end you will thank god you don't live there. That's the big difference. Searingly honest, dark and hopeful, beautiful and brutal, and as close to seeing a soul as words will allow.
This is a wonderful collection of poetry. Raw, gritty, and very emotional, I felt the pain he has gone through. I highly recommend this book.
The second installment by Max Mundan was quickly consumed, by myself, in a dark room in the wee hours of morning. Bleary eyed and confused, I search my room for just one more hit... Max Mundan joins the pantheon of Bukowski, Ginsberg, Burroughs in battling his demons in a raw, coherent and lyrical style.
One of the most exciting works I've read in quite a while. It's exciting, disturbing, heartbreaking, and hopeful all at the same time. Can't wait to see what else this writer has to offer.
I've read books about addiction before and what the experiences have been like for the author. Often, they're descrptive words are "sad, depressed, broken, desperate,.." Things I have felt before but are general of most people nowadays. NEVER have I opened a book and been absolutely taken aback with how accurate the descriptions are in this read. Every dark, hateful, vulnerable, selfish, embarrassing thing I have ever felt and thought have been brought to light with max's words. My soul cried while reading this, reading my life, knowing someone else has gone to the edge and just made it out alive. This book is becoming my mirror. It's who I was and max doesn't sugar coat the ugly s*** to accommodate anyone. I love that. I have issues with frequent relapse and I've already sat at home in the early hours of morning reading this. Crying. Cleansing. Reminding myself of who I was and who he was. Remembering that he made it out and I can too. To people like me, this book has become more than just ink and paper, it's a reminder and its a savior. Keep writing max mundan, You have a lifelong fan right here.
